President’s Message

With summer winding down, it is appropriate to look back and look ahead. The Fourth of July parade featured our 98 year old track star Champ Goldy and his driver, Jack Tarditi. Our thanks go to Mike Underwood and his committee for organizing our presentation. Members also took trips to a local brewery and a local distillery. Regular activities such as golf, bridge, pinochle and bowling continued throughout the summer months. So too did the club’s speaker program. Neil Wise has put together an outstanding speakers program. At this point, he could use some help. Anyone who can secure or recommend a speaker for upcoming meetings should contact Neil.
Plans are in the works for a full schedule of special events for September through December. The details of these events are found later in this newsletter. Thanks to Bill Brown and Jack Aharon for arranging these events.
Please take advantage of the Club’s many activities and events and enjoy the rest of you summer and fall!

4th of July Parade

Once again the annual parade was a success for the club. The theme was Happy 60th Birthday to our club as well as a tribute to Champ Goldie, a long time Haddonfield resident, club member and avid runner. At age 98, Champ participated this year in the Penn Relays with his age grouping. Former Mayor Jack Tarditi drove Champ in the parade, followed by club members with signs advertising our club’s activities. The club thanks Mike Underwood for leading the committee as well as committee members John Hempstead, Lloyd Martinson, Warren Reintzel, Bernie Schaming and Al Schmidt. The following 23 members participate in this year’s parade.

END OF SUMMER LUNCHEON – September 10th
Come on out and enjoy yourself, by joining us for lunch first, followed by the business meeting, on September 10.
After lunch, we will have darts, chess, pinochle, Wii games and anything else you want to do.
Wear your sportiest summer outfit before you put it away until next year. No prizes for the best outfit, just the admiration of your peers.
See you there and remember to bring your appetite.
Reminder: Flea Market – September 19th
This is your chance to clean out some of that “stuff” you have been accumulating in your house for years, thinking that someday it would be useful. Well, it can be useful as donated items for sale at the Flea Market.
Please bring the items you are contributing to the regular meeting on Thursday, September 10th or on Thursday, September 17th. You may also bring your items to the Clubhouse on Friday, September 18th between 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM. The pricing of items and the preparation of other details will take place during this time.
If you have items to contribute and can’t deliver it, please call the Committee Chairman Bernie Schaming at 428-0932 to have someone pick it up. The plan for September 19th is to have our SET UP at Centennial One Parking Lot on Euclid Avenue completed by 8:00 AM. The public hours run from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
On behalf of the membership, please support the Flea Market project by donating marketable items since this is the only annual fundraiser held by the Club. Please exercise good judgment when making donations by not including: propane tanks; large grills, partially used chemicals/oil; rusty pots and pans (or those used for paint), chipped or cracked glassware, or, large furniture. Help us help you by contributing items that are clean and marketable. All useful items not sold are taken to Goodwill at the end of the day. Nothing is wasted.
Fast Upcoming Trip - September 29th, 2015
The Haddonfield 65 Club is taking another trip.  This time we are going to the Amish Country, in Lancaster, Pa, on September 29.
The trip will include transportation, leaving from Wedgewood Swim Club at 9 AM heading to the Amish Farm and House, with a tour and lecture on the Amish Life style, as well as a tour of the home and a one room school house. There will be liberal time to walk around the farm and explore on your own. Then, back on the bus for a one hour tour conducted by a step-on guide through the area.
Later we will drive to the Good 'N Plenty Restaurant and experience the best in PA Dutch cooking. Enjoy a mouth-watering, traditional family style meal of Pennsylvania Dutch goodness! Then we head home to Haddonfield around 4 PM. The cost for this all day trip is $60.00 inclusive.
Time is short; therefore payments must be received by August 29th. Checks can be made out to the Haddonfield 65 Club and sent to Jack Aharon at 439 Beachwood Ave., Haddonfield, or Bill Brown at 114 Centre St Haddonfield. Seating is limited so mail it today. Everyone is welcome.

We will leave Haddonfield from the Wedgewood Swim Club promptly at 8:00 AM, and head for those Christmas bargains at Rockvale Outlet Stores. From there we will head to the Shady Maple for lunch. After lunch we head to the American Music Theater for their spectacular Christmas Show before returning home to Haddonfield. The all-inclusive price is $80.00 per person.

The Games We Play
More than halfway through my second year in the Haddonfield 65 club I’d like to write a few words about how much fun it’s been. I know and appreciate that the club does many public- spirited and socially useful activities. But here I want to write about the more recreational side of membership – the games we play – which helped me a lot in getting to know the members and appreciating their talents.
First there was pinochle.  I had played that 48-card game casually in high school and college and it seemed relatively simple. But then I stopped playing for many years. Henry Leimkuhler had been my membership sponsor and told me about how much fun the guys had playing pinochle in the clubhouse at 12:30 on Wednesdays. It was winter and I had a broken foot, so pinochle seemed ideal to help me get to know some of the members. Henry helped me bone up on the rules and I started coming in on Wednesdays. I soon learned that I was in way over my head. The 65 Club pinochle players were like pros compared to me. I could barely keep track of how many trump had been played.  But guys like Butch Rementer and Bud Pusatere could look at the meld and somehow figure out what cards I had in my hand even when I hadn’t melded anything. Despite my poor play, the guys were all polite – even when I reneged!  They even gave me tips on how to improve. I’m not sure I did improve much, though.
Thank God spring finally came and I could play golf on Wednesdays. Mike Underwood does a wonderful job of organizing the golf schedules, pairings and handicaps for 24 to 28 guys.  And at least my golf skills are better than my pinochle ones. Last year I once shot the low net and the low gross score! But most of the time I scored somewhere in the top half of the pack. It’s easy to get to know people when you are on the course with them for over four hours and then have a beer together after the round.  The first time I played with Dennis Kille I found out he had been in law school with one of my best friends. As befits us seniors in the 65 Club, all the guys ride golf carts – except Butch Brees. He walks all 18 holes and doesn’t even use a pull cart- he carries his clubs.
With winter came bowling - something else I hadn’t done since high school. But Bill Brown gently encouraged me to come out and try it. It’s less expensive than golf and you get free coffee and donuts. Well, the snacks were fine, but I was back at the bottom of the heap again. It was embarrassing.  There was octogenarian Dick Gimigliano rolling strikes and spares, then gliding back to his seat like a surfer. There was Tom Mervine just standing at the line and throwing perfect curves into the pocket. There I was watching my ball roll into the gutter again. The guys did tell me that the balls the lane provides are pretty bad and that I need to get my own custom–drilled ball, which I will do as soon as golf season ends.  I hope it works!
I did not play in the Club’s Nintendo Wii tournament. My wife bought a Wii when they first came out, but we never used it much. If there is another Wii tournament this year, I’ll reconnect our console and practice up. Then look out guys, this might finally be my game!
