The Retired Men’s Club of Haddonfield
110 Rhoads Ave
President’s Message
This year the
65 club is celebrating its 60th anniversary. Those of you who will be attending the
Spring Luncheon on May 14th will be treated to a visual presentation
that was put together by Bob Parsons and Bill Brown. In that both these men are skilled in the
visual arts, we can be sure that the presentation will be something
special.
While we look
back to our sixty year history, it would behoove us to also look to our future.
Membership in many civil and social organizations has dropped off as their
membership has aged out. Our club seems to be doing better than many of these
other organizations. However, we cannot
take it for granted that we will maintain the numbers needed to continue the
programs and activities we all enjoy.
Our founders recognized the issue when they put in the Club By-Laws,
“All members of the Club are expected to obtain new members”.
The first
wave of the Baby Boomers will turn sixty-nine this year. As they roll through, because of their
numbers, the Boomers have changed the dynamics of every group or activity with
which they become involved. For the Club
to continue at its present level, we need to recruit and remain relevant to
this group. While we are comfortable
with our present programs and activities, we must keep an open mind to ideas
and programs that will attract younger members.
We have tried
a number of ways to attract new members whether it be ads, socials or
handouts. In the end, the consensus
seems to be that the best way to recruit is a one on one approach. If enough of our group beats the bushes, we
can be sure the Club will remain vibrant for years to come.
I look
forward to seeing you at the Spring Luncheon.

Feed My Starving Children Event – April 18th
This is the
third year that the 65 club has participated in this event at the Presbyterian
Church. In addition to members participating in the event, the club also
donates $200 to help support the material costs. This following table lists
this year’s participants in the event as part of the 65 Club group. Note that
other club members participated in the event as part of different groups. Thank
you all for supporting this worthy cause.

Casino Trip – April 28th
This was another excellent trip. All who participated
enjoyed the day very much. It was a beautiful day, the buffet was great and the
slots were handing out money hand over fist - just not the ones members were
playing. The trip was another first for the club. It was the first time that a
65 Club casino trip did not fill the bus. In fact, it was the first time we did
not have sufficient participants to meet the guaranteed minimum which means we
lost money on the trip. We will have to watch this closely in the future.
65th Anniversary
Henry C,
Kallfellz and Marie Kolsun were married June 10, 1950, at Sacred Heart RC
Church in Camden, N.J. They met at the Dancette in Oaklyn, N.J. The Dancette
was a popular place for young people to go. It was faith based and without
alcohol. Hank was a Masonry Contractor for many years, after which he did
free-lance estimating of masonry projects. They have five daughters and nine
grandchildren.
60th Anniversary
Although Charles D.
Tourtellotte and Barbara Richwine attended Haddonfield Memorial High School
together, they did not begin dating until after graduation. They were married
June 25, 1955, at the 1st Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Bryant
Kirkland. Charles graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 1953, medical
school at Temple University and with a graduate degree in Bio-Chemistry, in
1957. After interning at the University of Michigan in Internal Medicine he
joined Temple University in the field of Rheumatology. In 1962-63, he did
research in Bio-Chemistry at Rockefeller University. In 1963 Charles joined the
faculty at Temple University and later became Chief of Rheumatology until his
retirement in 1997. Barbara graduated from Drexel University with a degree in
Home Economics and later worked for the Philadelphia Electric Company.
Barbara and Charles have three sons who live in the area
and one daughter, in Rochester, NY. There are four grandchildren.
50th Anniversary
Donald T. Windus was raised in Bristol and
Haddonfield. He was employed with insurance and pharmaceutical companies. Don
met his wife Connie in Ocean City NJ while he was serving in the NJ Air
National Guard. They were married on June 26, 1965.
Don and Connie
have enjoyed the great outdoors with Road Scholar (Elderhostel) programs and
planning their own trips to out West, Maine, Canada and Costa Rico.
They will
celebrate their 50th on a riverboat cruise in Europe.
