President’s Message
Happy New Year to all and thank you for
entrusting me to lead the Haddonfield
65 Club this year. A special thanks to Dennis Kille for his steady leadership and for ensuring a
smooth transition. Our last meeting had
a fine turnout (almost 30) to hear about the Battleship New Jersey's history and current status.
I hope you have survived the recent
snow flurries (or flurry of snow). I
heard a local weather forecaster predicting more of these events this decade and beyond as part of the
global climate change. She had a graphic
showing number of snowfalls exceeding 12" by decade: only 1 in the 1980's, 2 in the 90's, 4 in the
2000's, and already 6 in this decade with
4 1/2 years to go. All this shoveling will be very taxing on my poor wife!
Bill Brown has set up some great
trips, so please sign up and pay up asap,
especially on the Winery/casino trip Feb. 17; and be sure to pay particular attention to the new
departure time and location.
Even though golf outings are
temporarily suspended, we still have the usual
pinochle and bridge game days, and bowling at Laurel Lanes on Rte. 73 Friday mornings. Our latest
added weekly activity is "Games Day" on Tuesday afternoons. Stop by for
Wii, poker (chips only!), darts, and whatever
else you can find.
Henry Leimkuhler, our 1st Vice
President, is hard at work finding speakers who
will educate, entertain, and even spellbind us; but we would all benefit from your suggestions for
speakers, which Henry will gladly arrange.
I am happy to receive emails at (neilwise@camden.rutgers.edu) or phone calls (856-397-3100) with your
suggestions, ideas, or complaints (the latter
of which I will refer to Bernie). It's always great to see everyone at our Thursday afternoon
meetings, the business pieces of which
are mercifully short, so please continue to be healthy and show up!

DUES
That’s right; this is
the last month before we send out letters to remind you that if you don’t pay
your dues, you will be dropped from the membership of the club. We have 35
members who haven’t paid their dues for 2016.
ARE YOU ONE OF THEM? Give Walt Baker a call, 856-429-7288, and he’ll let
you know. The cost is $20.00. Make a check out to “65 Club” and forward it
to: Walt Baker, 400 N. Haddon Ave., Unit 209, Haddonfield, NJ 08033-1736. Help us save on postage and get those dues
in. THANK YOU.
Tomasello Winery and Casino trip – February 17th
PLEASE NOTE: DUE TO LACK OF INTEREST, THIS TRIP HAS BEEN
CANCELLED.

Phillies Baseball Contest
OK all you
baseball fans put your thinking caps on. The first spring training game will be
on February 28 and the start of the season will be on April 4th
against the Reds in Cincinnati. The complete roster along with lots of other
information can be found online at www.Phillies.com.
The rules are
simple.
1) You must
submit an entry which lists the Phillies starting lineup for opening day. Your
entry must include the nine players at the starting positions.
2) You must
submit the batting order of your selected starters.
3) Since the
first game will be April 4th, all entries must be received (or
post-marked) by March 28th.
The winner
will be the person to select the correct lineup. In the event of multiple
correct starting lineup entries, the batting order will be used to break ties.
In the event of no correct entries, the closest entry will be deemed the
winner. Howard Rementer will be the official judge of entries.
Entries
should be emailed to bschaming@comcast.net
or snail mailed to Howard Rementer at 406 Briarwood Ave., Haddonfield, NJ
08033. Please write Phillies contest on
the snail mail envelope or in the subject line of your email.
Bill Brown Receives Medal
The Camden County Freeholders
presented Bill with one of the eleven 2016 Martin Luther King Camden County
Freedom Medals on January 22, 2016. The award was presented by the Camden County
Freeholders at a dinner at the Boat House on Cooper River. Bill was nominated
for the award by Carlton Chin who is also a club member. The nomination letter
sighted many accomplishments for Bill including his efforts on behalf of the
Japan Exchange, the Mable Kay House, the Haddonfield Tennis Association,
Haddonfield Soccer League, Girls Pigtail Softball, Little League, Indian King
Tavern, 65 Club and the Markeim Art Center.
The ward was well deserved.
Congratulations Bill.
“AND THE WINNER
IS…”
February is a
tough month. The holidays are past. Spring has not yet arrived. And golf does
not start until April. But for me February is redeemed because it’s the month
Hollywood announces who wins the Academy Awards. The nominations come out in
mid-January, and the theaters usually bring back any Oscar-nominated films that
played earlier in the year.
My goal is to
see every one of the nominees for best movie, and in addition to see as many of
the other films as I can that have gotten best actor/actress nominations. Since the Motion Picture Academy now permits
more than the traditional five nominations for best picture, this works out to
a lot of movies. Last year I needed to go see 9 films just to cover the best
picture slot. This year there are 8. There are also 6 best actor/actress
nominees from movies that did not get nominated for best picture.
Part of the
fun of the build up to the big night when the winners are announced is reading
the pundits’ predictions of who the winners will be – and seeing if they agree
with me! My personal favorite for best picture this year is The
Martian, about a U.S. astronaut accidentally stranded alone on Mars.
I’m an old science fiction fan and had already read the book. I wondered how
the film makers could possibly get the book’s two major stories into a two hour
film. The first story is about how the stranded astronaut survives for hundreds
of “sols” (Martian days) and gets back into space to his rescue ship. The
second story is about the political maneuvering back on Earth over how and who
should rescue him. But the film makers did it spectacularly. The film’s star, Matt
Damon, was also nominated for best actor.
He had been nominated for best actor once before but did not win. This
might be his year.
But it might
also be Leonardo DiCaprio’s year for his role in The Revenant, a very
brutal western frontier/revenge story. DiCaprio has been nominated five times
before and has never won. He’s overdue. Eddie Redmayne got a best actor
nomination this year for a terrific job in The Danish Girl. But he won the best
actor last year for his portrait of Stephen Hawking, the crippled British
genius, and it’s very rare for an actor to win twice in a row. Only Spencer
Tracy in the 1930s and Tom Hanks in the 1990s have done it. My take is that
it’s between Damon and DiCaprio for Best Actor. My favorite for best actress is
Saoirse Ronan, the Irish actress who played a young and initially very
timid immigrant who lands in Brooklyn in the early 1950s. Ronan
is now 22 years old. She got a best supporting actress nomination when she was
only 13.
I still have
a few of the nominated films and actors to see before Academy Awards night on
Sunday, February 28. I have been tuning in to that Hollywood TV spectacle since
Bob Hope was the regular host. My wife likes the red carpet interviews. I like
the MC’s jokes, the songs, and the crowd reaction shots of the winners (and
losers). I can do without the
long-winded acceptance speeches. But here’s the funny thing: I have never
fallen asleep in a movie theater, but I always fall asleep before the Oscar TV
show ends!
