President’s Message

I regret that Roger Clark (Haddonfield resident, Law School Prof., and Nobel Peace Prize nominee), will not be able to speak at our Spring Luncheon.  He has, however, agreed to speak at one of our upcoming meetings; so stay tuned for an announcement on that. The good news is that Henry has lined up an outstanding motivational speaker: Maria A. Moffa, MS, JD.  Maria is a dynamic and engaging speaker who brings her energy, positivity and compassion to her presentation, and will leave us "ready to overcome obstacles for achieving success."
Bill Brown has assembled an excellent trip plan for June, which includes a tour of the Lincoln Financial Center ("The Linc"), lunch at Chickie & Pete's, and a tour of the Simeone Car Museum.  A friend told me yesterday that the museum is quite unique in that it houses some very rare and expensive vintage cars.
We are fortunate, indeed, to live in an area that has so much to offer: museums, sports, cultural events, entertainment, a great selection of restaurants, and access to some of the best medical care in the U.S.  I'm not just talking about what the City of Brotherly Love has, all of the above options are right here in South Jersey as well.  Camden was once a thriving, bustling industrial, shopping, and cultural center.  Some of the industry, in the form of 'light' industry and commercial centers, are re-locating in that city; there's no shortage of cultural and theatrical events on the Rutgers Camden campus, the Scottish Rite auditorium, Haddonfield Plays and Players, the Ritz theater (a friend recently reminded me that the Ritz offered X-rated fare in the 1970's, but I wasn't aware of that), Eastern H.S., and most of the local high schools; and lots of high quality and competitive local sports at HMHS.
Finally, let me remind everyone that I predicted a few months ago that our NJ primary ballots would be important, and it's looking like that's true; so make sure you are registered for a party to vote in that party's primary contest.  Also, there's still time to sign up for "Vote by Mail" ballots so you do not have to wait in line. VBM ballots must be received by the County Board of Election before close of polls on Election Day. You can get an application at the County Clerk’s Office, Your Municipal Clerk’s Office, the County Store in Voorhees or at www.camdencounty.com/clerk, and you can sign up for ALL elections, or SOME, by specifying on the Application.

Casino Trip – Wednesday, April 6th
The Casino trip on Wednesday, April 6, was a great success. Although nobody came home with a new car or the equivalent, a good time was had and Eric Kearns and his show VOICES OF LEDGENDS was excellent.  Watch the newsletter for news about all future trips.
Feed My Starving Children Event – April 9th
Thank you to all the members who participated in this event. This is the third year that the club has participated and everyone agrees it is a very satisfying event.
Ladies Spring Luncheon – May 12th
There has been a change in the program for the luncheon. Unfortunately, our original speaker is unable to make the event. Instead we will have Maria A. Moffa, MS, JD, a terrific motivational speaker. In addition, Julia Chin and a small group from the high school will provide music for the event during cocktails from 12:00 to 12:30. Come early and enjoy the entertainment.
The Cash Bar will open at 12:00 Noon and lunch will be served at 12:30. The three entre selections are: Breast of Chicken Francaise with Sauce Beurre Blanc, Filet of salmon with Dill Sauce or Pasta Primavera. Of course, there will also be the usual accompaniments; rolls, butter, coffee and tea as well as ice cream for dessert.
The cost of the luncheon is $30 per person. Our members will be called shortly for their reservations.

Haddonfield 65 Club Trip – June 28
The 65 club will embark on a tour of the Eagles stadium and a unique auto museum along with lunch at Chickie & Pete’s on June 28th. We will board our school bus at the HMHS and depart at 10:00AM for the Linc. Following the tour of the Linc, we will head to Chickie & Pete’s for lunch where you have a choice of a hamburger or cheese steak, coffee or soda. Alcoholic beverages are available on your dime.
After lunch we will tour Dr. Simeon’s Auto Museum featuring one of the world’s greatest collection of racing sports cars. We return to Haddonfield at approximately 4:00PM.
The all-inclusive price is only $35.00. For reservations please contact Bill Brown at 856-429-4368, or billbrown08033@aol.com.
65th Anniversary
Isabelle Zaffaroni, from CleElum, Washington, and John P. Williams, a young US Navy officer, were married in Cheney, Washington on June 16, 1951. John had graduated from the Naval Academy in Annapolis in 1944. He was assigned as Ship’s Navigator on the USS Walk and earned the Silver Star in an action by a Japanese Kamikaze plane that hit the ship’s bridge. John retired from the US Navy and earned a Masters Degree in Civil Engineering. He then worked for the Rohm and Haas Company where he was in charge of maintenance at the Bridesburg Plant. John and Isabelle have one son, one daughter and five grandchildren.
60th Anniversary
Vince Rubatzky and Verna Dudynski were married in June 16, 1956 in New York City instead of attending Vince’s graduation from Cornell. Without time for a honeymoon they made their first home in Blacksburg Virginia where Vince began graduate studies and Verna worked for the telephone company.  Their son John was born in Virginia. With Verna’s help, Vince continued his graduate studies at Cornell and Rutgers instead of working. Their daughter Jane was born in New Brunswick. In 1964, the family moved to Davis California where Vince began commercial vegetable production extension and research work for the University of California. Verna worked in a medical office while raising Vince and the children. After 35 years of service Vince retired. Verna continued her career as a grandmother by moving to Haddonfield in late 1999 to interact with daughter Jane’s three young children.  Their son John resides with his wife Monica and their three children in Arroyo Grande California. Vince and Verna exchange visits with them, although it’s never enough.
50th Anniversaries
Tom Rayser met his wife to be, Judy Hertzog, in high school. Tom grew up in Pennsauken but moved to Barrington in 1960 and attended Haddon Heights High School. Tom first saw Judy while working on decorations for a high school dance. He even had a dream about meeting her, but didn’t have the nerve to talk to her. As fate would have it, Judy asked Tom to that Junior Assembly dance for their first date. The rest is history.
After graduating high school in 1962, Tom attended Rutgers College in Camden. Judy went to work for Coolidge Mortgage Company in Camden and later for Campbell Soup Company. Tom graduated from Rutgers with a Business Degree on June 2, 1966. His fraternity gave him a bachelor party (which Tom says he was lucky to have survived) and on June 4, 1966 he and Judy were married. Tom joined the Army National Guard, 50th Armor Division, and went to work for Mobil Oil Corporation. Tom served 6 years in the Guard and was a tank commander when he received his discharge. He held a number of positions in the Controllers function of Mobil Oil and retired in August 2000 after Mobil and Exxon merged.
Tom and Judy have a son and 2 daughters and 7 grandchildren. The girls and their families live in Haddon Heights. Their son and his family live in Placerville, CA. Each year as a family, they look forward to spending 3 weeks in August in Cape May. Judy is a big Neil Diamond fan and Tom enjoys seeing the country. Through the years they have been to more than 130 Neil Diamond concerts in 65 cities in 31 of the United States plus Canada and England.
Their 50th anniversary plans are to visit the Biltmore Estate and spend time with friends in Virginia and North Carolina along the way.
James (Buz) Murphy grew up in Cincinnati and Anne Halbeisen grew up on Lansdowne Avenue in Haddonfield.  They met on St Patty’s day, March 17, 1965 at Murphy’s Sea Bay Inn at Normandy Beach, NJ.  Buz was in the Navy at the time, stationed at NAS Lakehurst.   They were married a little over a year later on May 14, 1966.
After living in Stratford, NJ for 10 years they moved to Haddonfield in 1976, compromising between their two home towns by living on the Cincinnati side of Haddonfield.  They have lived on Warwick Road, Olney Circle and now Haddon Avenue.  Anne graduated from St. Mary of the Angels Academy in Haddonfield and their 3 children graduated from the Haddonfield schools, playing lots of sports for their parents to enjoy.  Mark now lives in Greenwich CT, Scott in Collingwood and Kristin in San Francisco.
Buz worked in systems for IBM, RCA and INA/Cigna/ACE beginning in 1968 and finally retiring from IBM in 2009.  Buz and Anne now split their year between Haddonfield Commons and Sea Towers in St. Petersburg, Florida.  They especially enjoy watching their 6 grandchildren grow up in sports but also branching out into music and dance and shows.

Guess Who
One of our members suggested that this might be a fun thing to include in the newsletter. This is bschaming@comcasst.net or snail mail a photo to Bernie Schaming at 816 Wayside lane, Haddonfield, NJ 08033. If you mail a photo, it will be returned to you so you don’t lose that precious memory. The photo should be approximately in the age range of 2-8 years.
the first of hopefully a series of “Guess Who” photos to appear in the newsletter. If you would like to participate in the fun, please submit a photo for inclusion in a future newsletter.  You may email a digital photo to
If you have a guess as to who this photo represents, you may email, write or call Bernie with your guess. Correct guesses will be listed in the next newsletter (which is July).
