President’s Message
I don't know how Bill
Brown has been able to sustain the excellence with so many terrific trips
lately and coming up. On October 25th, we were all impressed with
the size, services, and commitment of the Kroc Center in Camden. We were also
sufficiently moved and inspired to want to do something to help the Center.
While we will be discussing some volunteer work at the Center, we can start by
bringing in any ('Family Friendly') books that you have but no longer need. I'll drive them to the Center in a few weeks.
Next month we'll be
visiting the Chapel of the Four Chaplains, which should also be inspiring.
Watch also for more announcements on volunteering to serve meals at the
Cathedral Kitchen during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.
As the year winds down,
we are looking for nominations, including self-nominations, to serve the 65
Club as an officer or on the Board of Directors for a three year term. Nominations
may be submitted to your President (neilwise@camden.rutgers.edu),
Bernie Schaming, or Dennis Kille.
Though we are more of a
social club than a 'service' club, there is still a very strong ethic of
service to the club that helps sustain us throughout the year. In that vein,
thanks to the hard core of worker bees who stayed after the Oct. 20 meeting to
help clean and beautify the grounds of our property.

HADDONFIELD
FALL FESTIVAL
The 65 Club would like to thank
Walt Baker, Bill Brown, Tom Grimes, and Al Schmidt for representing the club at
the Haddonfield Fall Festival. A few applications were handed out. Hope they result in new members.
2017 Dues
Guess what? That’s right, it’s time to pay your 2017 DUES. What’s the cost, it’s
still just $20.00, what a bargain. Give
Walt Baker the money at a meeting or send it to: Walt Baker, Unit 209, 400 N. Haddon Ave.,
Haddonfield, NJ 08033-1736. Make the
check out to “65 Club”. If you make it
out to Walt, your dues will be going for Walt’s spending money and you will
still owe dues.
Wine & Cheese Party – November 12th
The Haddonfield 65 Club annual Wine and
Cheese Party will be held on Saturday November 12. Once again it will be held
at the Episcopal Church on Kings Highway, in their community room. Parking is
available in the Speed Line parking lot.
Initially, the prime purpose of this event
was to recruit new members, but it has evolved into a club social event.
However, members are encouraged to invite prospective members along with their
wives. The cost of the event is $5.00 per person. Prospective members are free,
however, spouses of prospective members will be charged.
The club will supply the wine and cheese,
but if you are inclined to share one of your favorite snacks or desserts, they
will be most welcome. The festivities commence at 6:30pm , with music provided
by our own Jack Poupard, and his group.
This is a great opportunity for our
partners to meet each other. Remember the date November 12, at 6:30 PM, and
only $5.00 per person.
Chapel of the Four Chaplains Trip – Nov. 15th
A trip to the Chapel of the Four Chaplains
at the Philadelphia Naval Base will take place, on Tuesday, November 15. We
will depart via school bus from Wedgewood swim Club at 11 AM. After our arrival
at the Chapel of the Four Chaplains, there will be a brief tour and explanation
of how these four chaplains lost their lives, after giving their life jackets
to other service men, as their ship was sinking.
Following the tour, we will enjoy lunch at
a local restaurant on the base.
The cost for the trip, tour, and lunch
will be $15.00. Checks can be sent to the club house, at 110 Rhoads Ave.
Haddonfield, attention Bill Brown. If you have questions, feel free to call
Bill at 856-429-4368
Christmas Trip to Doolan’s – December 6th

Doolan's in Spring Lake, NJ. We will depart by custom tour bus, on Tuesday,
December 6th at 9 AM. Prior

Following the meal there will be a show and time for dancing. We expect to
return to our starting point by 6 PM.

person. This trip fills up fast, don't miss the bus on this one. Checks can be sent to the club house at 110
Rhoads Ave. Haddonfield, attention, Bill Brown. If you have questions, contact
Bill at 856-429-4368
5K Heart Run & Bagel Bash– December 17th
The 65 club will again provide marshals
for the 5K Heart Run on December 17th as we have for many years. Ron
Howley is coordinating the event again this year. The job of the marshals is to
protect the runners at intersections. One or more marshals are assigned to each
intersection along the route. Please contact Ron at 428-0191 to volunteer your
help.
After the run is completed, all the
marshals as well as all club members are invited to meet at the clubhouse at
approximately 10:15. Along with bagels and/or donuts, coffee and tea to warm
the bellies, all clubhouse activities are available to provide a little
friendly competition among the attendees.
So, whether you are able to serve as a marshal or not, come on out and
have some fun. Feel free to bring a guest, especially prospective members.
50th Anniversary
Mary Grace (Delozier) and Joe Galliera met each other in 1964 at a college party. MG's twin
sister could not go to the party because she was sick so she asked her
boyfriend Joe Marsh to take MG to the party. After graduation from
Villanova, MG and Joe were married on November 26, 1966 at St. Vincent Pallotti
Catholic Church in Haddon Township. The church was going to be opened on
11/27, but the pastor, Rev. Bernard Hewitt, allowed them to use the church
the day before for their wedding. It was the first mass and
wedding to be performed in St. Vincent Pallotti Church. Their first residence
was an apartment on Clements Bridge Road in Barrington (rent was $90.00 per
month). At that time, Joe was a math teacher at Camden High School and Mary
Grace was a teacher at St. John's School in Collingswood.
Their first of 4 children (Gina) was born on December
29, 1970, followed up every 2 years by Joseph III, Gail, and Lisa. Mary Grace
retired as an employment counselor from the State of NJ Employment Service in
2008. Joe retired from the Kingsway Regional School District in 2014 after a
48-year career in education. As a teacher, he taught math, physics, biology,
and mechanical drawing at Camden High, Camden Catholic, and Bishop Eustace. As
a coach, Joe was head baseball coach at Camden Catholic, Bishop Eustace, and
West Deptford High Schools. Joe also served as a high school athletic director
for 30+ years. Joe has been inducted into the following: New Jersey
Baseball Coaches Association, South Jersey Coaches Association, and the
Camden County Sports Halls of Fame. Joe is an avid fan of the Phillies,
Eagles, and the Villanova Wildcats. MG and Joe are devout Catholics and serve
on many parish committees. They also enjoy traveling, especially to spend time
with their 3 grandchildren, Julian (Los Angeles), Bridget (Murfreesboro, TN),
and Ella (Stamford, VT). They will be traveling to the Grand Hotel on Mackinau
Island in Michigan to celebrate their 50th anniversary.
DR. DAN & MAYOR "TISH" -- PERFECT
TOGETHER
"There are extraordinary moments in
life, but there is nothing like witnessing the birth of a baby and
participating with parents in that amazing event," said Dan Colombi,
retired obstetrician and gynecologist.
"As a doctor, I was blessed to help
bring thousands of babies into the world (some 5,500 in total), and I've
experienced the special moment of hearing a baby's first cry, a mother's
exaltation of relief and pleasure, and a father's expression of pride first
hand -- and seeing the tears of joy from both parents.
"As for my personal life, that goes
doubly so with witnessing the birth of our own children, gifts from my wife
Letitia ("Tish") -- my beautiful partner who made those moments
possible and memorable. Tish and I have also had the joy of watching each of
our eight grandchildren born.
"Professionally, I never considered
doing what I did work," reflected Dr. Dan. "I looked at each day as a
privileged moment to help people in ways that only doctors can with patients.
So the gratification each day, even under the most difficult and trying
circumstances for some of my patients, was always there."
MEDICAL
PRACTICE. Dr. Dan's
medical practice spanned 33 years, with offices at Methodist Hospital in
Philadelphia, and at Blackwood, Clementon and Cherry Hill locally. He retired
in 1996. "Obstetrics and gynecology seemed a natural to me," said Dr.
Dan. "I got along well with women, and my easy but serious manner seemed
to mesh well with my communications skills and that put most of my patients at
ease, despite the sensitive and delicate nature of examinations and treatments
and delivering babies. This was an era when women patients looked for a doctor
they could trust; I was lucky to have the personality and skills which worked
well with my patients. And over the years many women referred their friends and
family members to my practice.
"I still hear from some of my former
patients," said Dr. Dan with a smile. "One woman called recently
thinking I still had my practice after seeing a 'planted' print media item
about me. She was disappointed to learn I retired 20 years ago, but we happily
talked of memories of the time she spent as my patient and friend."
A
GREAT MATCH. For Dr. Dan,
79, and wife Tish, 71, who was Haddonfield's first and only woman commissioner
in 1985, and first and only female mayor from 2001-2013, life's spin at the
wheel has brought both good fortune and great times together over the decades.
Dan's take on Tish is all about pride -
pride in her. "She's the famous one and the achiever, and the love of my life
for the 49 years we've been together. I've been very blessed with Tish as my
partner, and as I look back at all of our time together, I think I've
celebrated every moment. To have the support and love of someone special like
Tish is my best accomplishment in life."
Dan and Tish first met in 1967 in Texas
when Dan was a doctor in the Air Force. "Tish was working as a secretary,
and when we met there was an instantaneous spark," said Dan. "She was
beautiful and smart, and we had a short courtship, and married quickly. Before
I knew it, the Air Force shipped me off to the Philippine Islands with Tish. At
the time, the Vietnam war was raging, there was a heavy influx of casualties to
the hospital at which I was stationed, and I, with my general surgical
experience, treated and operated on numerous wounded fighting men. The endless
flow of wounded needing help was a challenging and difficult experience I shall
never forget.
"There was also an upside in our
personal lives. Tish gave birth to our first daughter, Tiffany, and I helped
make the delivery."
Dan and Tish have lived in Haddonfield
since 1969.
SPORTS
FAN, COMMUNITY ACTIVIST.
In addition, Dan (a die-hard Phillies fan, sports nut and a relentless
"list" maker) and Tish are both still "pitching" help to
others with their many charitable and community activities.
The Haddonfield 65 Club has been fortunate
to have Dan as a member since 1995. Dan also served as president of the club
from 2010-2011. "I continue with various activities, as well as providing
some more-than-subtle good humor, and an ever-optimistic view of life, despite
its many challenges," said Dan. (Dan has suffered two heart attacks, and
has been treated for both prostate and bladder cancer in recent years.)
KIDS
& GRANDKIDS. Today,
Dan and Tish play the proud roles of parents and grandparents, and play it
well. Tish and Dan have three daughters, all of whom -- with eight
grandchildren -- live in the area. They also have two sons, Dan, 56, from his
first marriage, who lives in California, and Todd, 53, from Tish's first
marriage, who lives in Texas.
"All are special joys in our
lives," said Dan. "And the grandkids can always rely on us for good
advice about life -- we hope it's good advice, anyway.
"Our oldest daughter, Tiffany is
married to Fred Pollack, Director of Corporate Development for IBIS World, an
international information company," said Dan. "They live in
Haddonfield with three of our grandchildren, Lexi, 21, a senior attending
Catholic University's nursing school in Washington, D.C.; Cole, 18, who entered
his freshman year at Scranton University in Pennsylvania this fall; and Max,
15, in his second year at Haddonfield High. Tiffany was a special education
teacher, and is now a child care provider, who looks after other people's
children on a daily basis.
"Our daughter Jennifer, an Arizona
State University graduate and a special education teacher in Cherry Hill, is
married to John Gallagher, an investment counselor, and they live in Cherry
Hill with two more of our grandchildren, Avery, 9, and Callum, 7.
"Our youngest daughter, Gabrielle, a
Georgetown University grad, is married to David Heimerling, Director of
Business Analytics for SOS, an international health company, and they live in
Cherry Hill with our grandchildren Daniel, 10, Stella, 9, and Leo, 6."
THE
JOY OF RELIGION. Religion
is also a very important part of the Colombi lives. "I'm an ordained
deacon of the First Presbyterian Church of Haddonfield, have been a member
since 1993, and an elder trustee, as well," said Dan. "Best part is I
lead a bible study class each Wednesday from September to May each year, and
have been doing that since 2001. There is much to be learned from times in
which people lived thousands of years ago, as well as the faith they passed
down through the generations that we have today."
UPBRINGING. Dan was born and raised in West
Philadelphia, the son of Peter and Mary Ann Colombi. "Dad was born in New
York and later became a semi-pro baseball player with company teams into his
early 30s; mom was a homemaker who cooked full meals every day for me and my
sisters, Cathy, born in 1944, and Elena, born in 1948," recalled Dan.
"We were a close-knit family. Dad was 99 when he passed and my mother was
83 when she died, but both gave me a sense that I could achieve anything in
life as long as I applied myself."
EDUCATION. "I found myself loving education,
getting good grades throughout my school years, and discovering new facets of
life daily," said Dan. "I went to St. Thomas More High School from
1951-1955, then earned a full scholarship with a major in English to LaSalle
College. But about my junior year, the English major lost its appeal and I
decided to become a pre-med major. I really took to it, earned a scholarship,
and by the time I graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B.A. degree in 1959,
medicine and being a doctor was what I most wanted in life.
"I went on to Temple University and
earned my medical degree in 1963; I was also yearbook co-editor. Post-graduate
I interned at Mercy Catholic Hospitals - the Fitzgerald Mercy Division - of
southeastern Pennsylvania in 1963-64, then at Temple University Health Sciences
Center from 1964-67, and was Chief Resident from 1966-67.
LISTS. In addition to family, Dan has some
intense interests, among them being sports (particularly baseball), as well as
jazz and movies. But baseball trivia is at the top of his list. "Speaking
of lists," recalls Dan, "I became somewhat famous locally in the late
1970s and early 1980s, and it was all about sports page lists. The Philadelphia
Inquirer ran a series of contests at the time in which people were asked to
submit lists of people or events which were interesting. I became intrigued, and I found time,
somehow, to make numerous submissions, mainly about baseball trivia, for which
I received $5 for each printed item. I called it my retirement fund, and I
accumulated so many winners over the several years of the contests, that I
became champ of printed submissions - some 200 - something I relish to this
day."
As for baseball trivia, ask Dan any
question to this day, and the accurate answers will flow like the Delaware
River. For example, Dan was recently asked for the Phillies starting lineup in
their National League championship 1950 year, and he gave the starting lineup,
the starting and relief pitching staffs, and reserve players as well. Dan is
the man when it comes to baseball trivia. "I believe I've been a sports
buff since I was a kid," said Dan with excitement. "All probably
thanks to my dad's intense interest in baseball. Over the years, despite my
busy life, I kept at it, and until this day I enjoy it."
AFFILIATIONS,
AWARDS, TEACHING. Thanks
to his medical practice, Dr. Dan has had numerous affiliations and received
many awards over the decades, an overwhelmingly lengthy list. He has also been
a teacher of medical students. Suffice it to say, Dr. Dan's busy life as a
physician, a husband, a father and grandfather, a community activist, a master
of lists and a baseball enthusiast -- as well as an honored member of the
Haddonfield 65 Club -- has been fulfilling to the nth degree.
TAKING
YOUR BREATH AWAY.
"In the end it's not going to matter
how many breaths you take, but how many moments took your breath away,"
said Shing Xiong. "I can count
those moments in the many thousands, and every one of them has been
memorable," said Dan Colombi.
That's Dan, living life to the fullest,
and relishing every moment.
