President’s Message

What do you have in common with Robert Frost, George O'Keeffe, Pablo Casals, Albert Einstein, George Burns and Carl Sandburg? These are some of the most celebrated examples of people who did their most creative work well into seventies eighties and nineties. They all had highly functional memories and agile minds. Following their example, I guess this is the time for us to enjoy our golden years.
We have enjoyed many successful events this past year. Thanks again to all those who helped with the Heart Run. Next up is a food packaging event for Feed My Starving Children to be held March 24th and 25th Please let Bernie know if you can help.
On April 13th we plan to clean up the outside of the club house. Neil Tully is coordinating the landscaping. Unfortunately, I'll be in Florida. What poor timing.
Al Schmidt has some very interesting speakers scheduled. Our Spring Luncheon is scheduled for May 11 at Tavistock county club. Al has already lined up musical entertainment. This should interest the ladies too.
John Cokos is looking for new members. Perhaps you could bring a guest to one of our events. We are all part of the membership committee.
Golfers get ready for some competition and fun. Please find the schedule from Mike Underwood below.
Beware of the Ides of March, March 15th, There is a good movie starring George Clooney called the Ides of March. Something about politics. Anyway, I hope that President Trump has a good day.

While each segment stands alone, it’s best to see the entire series from, start to finish. Spouses and friends are welcome.

                  Remembrance of Times Past

Every so often something I see or read will set off a string of memories that remind me of how much things have changed over the years. At breakfast the other day I read an article that said that Saint Gregory’s School and Church in Magnolia was going to be replaced by a 5,400 square-foot convenience store and gas station.  Whoa!  This set off a rush of thoughts and memories. When I was a kid in Catholic school they were opening – not closing -- schools and parishes all over the diocese. In those days, the Church had clout! It had lists of movies you were not allowed to go to see. The nuns told us that Catholics should not vote for Adlai Stevenson because he was divorced. Nobody would dare to criticize the Pope. Bishop Sheen had his own national TV show!
I did not get to see the good bishop on TV very often because my family was the last on our block - -maybe in the whole neighborhood- -to get a television. I had to go to a friend’s house to watch Davey Crocket on the wild frontier. But we did have a big old radio and, in those days radio still had real programs, not just news, sports talk and music. I devoured everything on the air from Bobby Benson and his B bar B Riders, and The Lone Ranger, through Queen for a Day, to Walter Winchell. (“Mr. and Mrs. North and South America, Let’s Go to Press” ).  By the time we eventually did get a television many of my favorite radio programs had either moved to TV or just faded away.
By the mid-50s the programs that I listened to on my new AM/FM clock radio in my bedroom were all on one station. The dial did not move from WIBG: Hi Lit, Joe Niagra, Tom Donahue and the other DJs played the music that my generation wanted to hear.  The older generation was not so sure about Rock-n-Roll. At the Friday night dances at Camden Catholic the nuns and the lay faculty had to police the dance floor to make sure things did not get too risqué. Line dances were OK. But the Twist and many of its successors were suspect. Even in slow dances you could not get too close to your partner.
Time marches on. Camden Catholic has long since moved to Cherry Hill.  There are hardly any actual nuns left teaching there. Tuition is a lot higher than it was in the 1950s, even allowing for inflation. My old parish, Holy Savior in Westmont, was merged with St. John’s in Collingswood. The Pope even seems to be getting criticized by some of his own bishops!
But I don’t despair. My Camden Catholic class of 1961 had its 55th reunion at Tavistock last May. Over 100 people turned out. It was “interesting” to see so many of us senior citizens on the dance floor doing the Twist, the Bristol Stomp, the Cha-Cha, etc. In addition to catching up with all that’s occurred since our 50th reunion, I was struck by how much of our conversations and laughter harkened back to many of the fun things that we did with our classmates - present and departed - back in those days. And this should remind us to “seize the day” now -- not just
