President’s Message

Here we go again, our 11th month out of 12, the year will be over before we know it, how time does fly.
One bright note – we will be turning our clocks back to standard time, it's nice just to save one hour.
We in Haddonfield are blest to live in this community, we have much to be thankful for at this time of our lives, starting with getting up each morning. The club has lost several long time members during the prior 10 months. We had two members celebrate their 100th year in 2014. We have also gained a handful of new members who are going to keep the club growing, and going strong.
Regardless of how the referendum flows, on the sale of Haddonfield's Water System, the water will keep flowing, unlike other countries where water is a luxury. I just hope that everyone will get out and vote their preference. That's another thing that we should be thankful for, our right to vote.
We should also be thankful for all of the men and women that have served in the armed forces, many paying the ultimate price. Freedom is never free, and we are the beneficiaries of their efforts and sacrifices.
So when you sit down with family and friends at Thanksgiving, really give thanks for all that we have and enjoy in our daily lives.

Happy 100th Birthday Arthur Merker
Arthur Merker was born August 19, 1914. Just think about that for a minute. Art has lived through both world wars; the depression; the proliferation of telephones, automobiles and the interstate highway system; the great depression; the development of air travel; the cold war; space exploration and moon landing as well as the digital communication explosion and the rise of worldwide terrorism. He has seen all of this throughout the span of 17 of our 44 presidents. The year Art was born there were 257 miles of paved roads in the USA; today there are 2.6 million miles (according to AAA South Jersey).

Art’s parents met in NYC after coming to America from Germany around the turn of the century. His mom cleaned homes and his dad was a blacksmith in Queens NYC.
Art met Florence Shewark through a friend of his who was a cousin of Florence's. They were married on June 1, 1941 in the St. Stanislaus Church in Maspeth, L.I., N.Y. Art served in WWII and was stationed in Puerto Rico. He became a Master Sargent and oversaw the artillery training. He worked at Union Carbide for 49 years. He began in uptown Manhattan right near the Empire State Building and for much of that time he was going to night school for mechanical engineering. He also worked part time as a cashier at Lundy's Restaurant in Long Island which was very famous at the time. He was transferred to South Jersey in 1956 as head of the chemical division but he still knows NYC like the back of his hand.

After retirement Art had many other jobs including landscaping with his son, driving for many funeral homes and he was also a driver for Governor Cahill.
Art and Florence have lived in Haddonfield for 45 years. They have two sons, Craig and Curt, and three grandchildren. Art has been a member of the Haddonfield Lions for over 55 years and was a past President. He joined the Haddonfield 65 Club in 1979 and has been a member for the past 35 years and was an active golfer with the club for many of those years.

Fall Stag Luncheon – October 9th
The 65 Club Fall Stag Luncheon held at Tavistock Country Club on October 9th was a big success.  Thanks to Bob Parsons’ dedicated effort to this event, everything went smoothly and was enjoyed by all that attended.
The event was attended by Haddonfield Mayor Kasko, Commissioners Moscatelli and Rochford as well as Borough Administrator Sharon McCullough.
Our speaker was Chris May, co-anchor of CBS-3 Eyewitness News at 5, 6 and 11 PM.  An award-winning journalist, May has covered politics and government up close and in depth throughout his career. In July, 2011, May had a one-on-one interview with President Barack Obama at the White House during efforts to resolve the debt ceiling crisis.
Chris spoke not only about his experiences along the way to achieving his broadcasting dream but also about the rapid changes taking place in the news business.
If you missed the event, you missed a great time and a great speaker.
Wine and Cheese Party – November 15th
Since the First Wine and Cheese proved to be a great success last year, we will hold our second one on Saturday, November 15, at the Markeim Arts Center, located at Lincoln Ave and Walnut Street, from 7:00 till 11:00 PM. Music will again be furnished by Jack Poupard and friends.
There will be a few changes this year, we will be charging $5.00 per attendee, plus if anyone would like to show their culinary skills by bring a dessert, or appetizer, that will be greatly appreciated. As in the past any prospective member will be welcome with their guest, without cost.
This social get together is held to introduce new members to one of our club's activities, as well as giving existing members and their partners an opportunity to mingle in a social setting.
Please get your payments in so that we can determine the amount of wines, cheeses, plates etc.
Try to bring a prospective new member.
Please contact Bill Brown at 429-4368 or via email at billbrown08033@aol.com if you plan to attend, so we know how many people to expect and if you plan to bring something.
Casino Trip – Tuesday, December 9th
This year our casino trip will be to the Tropicana in AC, on Tuesday, December 9th, departing Wedgewood Swim Club at 10:00 AM.  The cost of the trip is $40.00 per person, and will include BINGO on the way down, upon arrival we will receive $15.00 in slot play and lunch at Carmines. The show will begin at 3:30 PM and is titled "Jingle All The Way", featuring 10 dancers and two singers.
We should return to Wedgewood by 7:00 PM. Seats are on a first come basis, so get those checks into Walt Baker, or Bill Brown.  Please sign up ASAP by contacting Bill Brown at 429-4368 or via email at billbrown08033@aol.com.
Christmas Party – Thursday, December 11th
The 65 Club will hold its annual Christmas party, at the Haddonfield United Methodist Church at 29 Warwick Road on Thursday, December 11, beginning at 1:00 PM. There is ample parking behind the church and the most convenient entry door is near the parking lot. The keynote speaker this year will be Reverend Bob Costello Esq., senior minister at Haddonfield United Methodist Church.
For many years we have brightened Christmas for the patients at the Camden County Lakeland Long Term Nursing Facility in Blackwood by bringing small gifts to the Christmas party for distribution at the hospital. Please do not wrap the gifts because they will be opened by hospital staff before being given to the recipients.  Some of the patients have health concerns; therefore, we are asked not to bring candy or other sweets, or money. It is suggested that we use small gift bags with a touch of tissue paper to make them look festive as well as not create work for the hospital staff.
Please note: this year, club member’s spouses are invited to attend. We are attempting to have a children’s group join us to improve the quality of Christmas carol singing attributed to the members in past years. Jack Poupard and his Merry Makers will be supplying the instrumental music.
Refreshments for this affair will be supplied through the generosity of P. J. Whelihan's of Haddon Township. Please keep them in mind when you go out for dinner or a late night snack. Of course we will still have our famous punch.

Dues for 2015
Our dues will remain the same for the year 2015, “$20.00”.  You can start paying them now.  You can give them to Walt Baker at a Thursday Meeting or you can send them to Walt at:  Walt Baker, 400 N. Haddon Ave, Unit 209, Haddonfield, New Jersey 08033-1736.  Make the check out to “65 Club” and not to Walt.  This year no more Nice Guy Walt, I’ll cash them and you’ll be out $20.00.  I know I say this every year, but could we please try to get all the dues in by December 31st so we can save making the phone calls and mailing out letters.

Warning: E-Mail Scam
Dennis Kille reported at the Board of Directors meeting on an e-mail scam in which you receive an e-mail that appears to come from someone you know, e.g. someone in your e-mail address book. It generally contains a link to some website. It is important that you do not follow the link unless you are certain it really came from someone you know. This happens when someone hacks into a computer and then sends the bogus e-mail to everyone in the computer owner’s address book so that it appears that it came from the computer’s owner.
