The Retired Men’s Club of Haddonfield
110 Rhoads Ave
Haddonfield, NJ 08033 December 1, 2014
President’s Message
Here we are, arriving at another December Newsletter which
implies the end of the year is near.
Before we do, however, let's look back on November before
we close the door on it. The club had its second Wine and Cheese Party, and
from all reports, it was a social success. Jack Poupard worked his musical
magic to the appreciation of all at the event. Many members as well as spouses
chipped in setting up as well as cleaning up, which was greatly appreciated.
Many of the 65 Club members were seen enjoying themselves
at a crossover event. I'm speaking of the Mabel Kay House Turkey dinner. They
paid attention at the weekly announcements at the club. Maybe next year we will
have a larger group in attendance.
Now for December, of course we have the official arrival of
winter, but more importantly the official arrival of Santa. There should not be
a problem with our members, because, I am certain that they were all good guys
during the year. On December 9, we will have our casino trip, this time we are
headed to the Tropicana, leaving the Wedgewood Swim Club Parking lot at 10:00
AM. The trip consists of $15.00 in slot play, lunch at Carmines, plus a
Christmas show, we expect to return around 7:00PM, with lots of winnings. All this
costs just $40.00 per person. There are still a few seats left at this time.
The nominating committee will submit our proposed slate of
officers and board members for 2015 to the board of directors at the December 4th
meeting. It looks like an outstanding group
to continue the traditions of the 65 Club.
I wish all the members a very Merry Christmas and a Happy
New Year.

Wine and Cheese Party – Another Success
The Wine and Cheese Party held at the Markeim Arts Center in
November was a huge success again. It provided an opportunity for members and spouses to meet
and mingle in a relaxed atmosphere. Events like this don't just happen; they
are the end result of a great deal of effort and contributions by club members.
Many thanks go to Bill Brown, Walt Baker, Charles Legge, Ron Howley, Howard
Rementer and Bernie Schaming for their efforts in preparing for and cleaning up
after the event.
Also, thanks to the many members who provided delicious
appetizers and desserts. They were all great.
A special thank you goes to Jack Poupard and his band for
providing music for the event.
-If
you were unable to attend the event, keep it in mind for next year. This is
turning out to be a great addition to the annual events of the club.
Casino Trip – Tuesday, December 9th
There are still seats available for the casino trip to the
Tropicana in AC, on Tuesday, December 9th, departing from the Wedgewood
Swim Club at 10:00 AM. The cost of the
trip is $40.00 per person, and will include BINGO on the ride down. Upon
arrival we will receive $15.00 in slot play and lunch at Carmines. The show
will begin at 3:30 PM and is titled "Jingle All The Way", featuring
10 dancers and two singers.
We should return to Wedgewood
by 7:00 PM. Seats are on a first come basis, so get those checks into Walt
Baker, or Bill Brown. Please sign up ASAP by contacting Bill Brown
at 429-4368 or via email at billbrown08033@aol.com.
Christmas Party – Thursday, December 11th
The 65 Club will hold its annual Christmas party, at the
Haddonfield United Methodist Church at 29 Warwick Road on Thursday, December
11, beginning at 1:00 PM. There is ample parking behind the church and
the most convenient entry door is near the parking lot. The keynote speaker this year will be Reverend Bob Costello Esq., senior minister at Haddonfield United Methodist Church.
For many
years we have brightened Christmas for the patients at the Camden County
Lakeland Long Term Nursing Facility in Blackwood by bringing small gifts to the
Christmas party for distribution at the hospital. Please
do not wrap the gifts because they will be opened by hospital staff before being
given to the recipients. Instead use small gift bags with a touch of tissue
paper to make them look festive and not create work for the hospital staff. Some
of the patients have health concerns; therefore, do not bring candy, sweets, or
money.
Please note: this
year, club member’s spouses are invited to attend. We are attempting to have a children’s group join us to
improve the quality of Christmas carol singing attributed to the members in
past years. Jack Poupard and his Merry Makers will be supplying the
instrumental music.
Refreshments for this affair will be supplied through the
generosity of P. J. Whelihan's of Haddon Township. Please keep them in mind
when going out for dinner or a late night snack. We will still have our famous
punch.
5K Heart Run & Bagel Bash– December 13th
The 65 club will again provide marshals for the 5K Heart
Run as we have for many years. Ron Howley will be coordinating the event this
year. The job of the marshals is to protect the runners at intersections. One
or more marshals are assigned to each intersection along the route.
This
year however, all the marshals as well as all club members are invited to meet
at the clubhouse at approximately 10:15, after the run is completed. Along with
bagels, coffee and tea to warm the bellies, all the games such as Wii (bowling,
golf, baseball & tennis), darts, pinochle and bridge are available to
provide a little friendly competition among the attendees. So, whether you are able to serve as a
marshal or not, come on out and have some fun.
Dues for 2015
It looks like
everyone is slacking off. We only have 18.5% of the members paid their dues as
of now. You only have to the end of the month to get them in. Its only $20.00
and can be given to Walt Baker at the meetings or sent to his home at 400 N.
Haddon Ave. Unit 209, Haddonfield, NJ 08033-1736. Make the check out to the
"65 CLUB". Really guys, I would like to see everyone get their
dues in and we won't have to make phone calls or send out any letters in March.
This is a big help since we must get the Directory printed in April. THANK YOU

A Senior Christmas Poem
'Twas the night before Christmas at Rock-Away Rest,
And all of us seniors were looking our best.
Our glasses, how sparkly, our wrinkles, how merry;
Our punch bowl held prune juice plus three drops of sherry.
A bedsock was taped to each walker in hope,
That Santa would bring us soft candy and soap.
We surely were lucky to be there with friends,
Secure in this residence and in our Depends.
Our grandkids had sent us some Christmasy crafts,
Like angels in snowsuits and penguins on rafts.
The dental assistant had borrowed our teeth,
And from them she'd crafted a holiday wreath.
The bed pans, so shiny, all stood in a row,
Reflecting our candle's magnificent glow.
Our supper so festive -- the joy wouldn't stop --
Was creamy warm oatmeal with sprinkles on top.
Our salad was Jell-O, so jiggly and great,
Then puree of fruitcake was spooned on each plate.
The social director then had us play games,
Like 'Where Are You Living?' and 'What Are Your Names?'
And all of us seniors were looking our best.
Our glasses, how sparkly, our wrinkles, how merry;
Old Grandfather Looper was feeling his oats,
Proclaiming that reindeer were nothing but goats.
Our resident wand'rer was tied to her chair,
In hopes that at bedtime she still would be there.
Security lights on the new fallen snow
Made outdoors seem noon to the old folks below.
Then out on the porch there arose quite a clatter
(But we are so deaf that it just didn't matter).
A strange little fellow flew in through the
door,
Then tripped on the sill and fell flat on the floor.
'Twas just our director, all togged out in red.
He jiggled and chuckled and patted each head.
We knew from the way that he strutted and jived
Our social- security checks had arrived.
We sang -- how we sang -- in our monotone croak,
Till the clock tinkled out its soft eight-p.m. stroke.
And soon we were snuggling deep in our beds.
While nurses distributed nocturnal meds.
And so ends our Christmas at Rock-Away Rest.
Before long you'll be with us. We wish you the best.
