President’s Message

The time has come, my last message as the President of the Haddonfield 65 Club.  What can I say that will sum up my two years as president of this fine club?
First of all, it has been my pleasure, and privilege to serve for those two years. I learned a great deal. First of all no one person runs the club, it's a real team effort. The officers, the board of directors and the chairmen of the various committees, all contribute to sharing the load. But, in that time there were always a few all-stars, such as Bill Hitchens, Walt Baker, and needless to say the real backbone of the club Bernie Schaming. From my first day as an officer, until my final day, Bernie is the one that was always there to guide, me make suggestions, and have the correct answers to all of my questions. Bernie has been the guiding light for all of the officers that preceded me and those that will follow. Thanks Bernie.
Reaching back to somewhere around the sixth grade, something stuck in my memory, the Athenian Creed or Oath, which was sworn to by those young men of Athens, reaching 12 years of age, 2,000 years ago, which in part says, "Thus, in all these ways, we will transmit this City not only, not less, but greater and more beautiful than it was transmitted to us." I have attempted to follow those guidelines in every organization that, I was a member. Sometimes I succeeded sometimes, I didn't. But, I always tried.
Was I successful in passing on the club better than it was transmitted to me to the new president and board of directors?  Time will tell. The members of the 65 Club will be my judges.
For the members, I can only ask you to get involved with the club, take part and become one of those that provide direction.
Thanks for permitting me to serve.

Christmas Party – Thursday, December 11th

Once again the Christmas party was a big success. This year was special in that for the first time, our wives were invited. Needless to say this added a touch of beauty to the affair. Background music was provided by Jack Poupard and two of his friends. Our Christmas message was provided by Rev. Bob Costello, senior minister at Haddonfield United Methodist Church. We owe a big thank you to P.J. Whelihans for proving the food this year. As in past years, we collected a large number of gifts which were delivered to the Elmwood Hills residents in Blackwood after the party. This year we had a special treat. The nursery school children at the Methodist Church joined us to sing a few Christmas Carols which were enjoyed by all - a significant improvement over the men’s singing in the past.

The board of directors recently instituted a service award in honor of Bill Hitchens who has given many years of service to the club. President Brown announced the award at the Christmas party. The inaugural award was presented to Bill Hitchens at his home the day after the Christmas party by Bill Brown and Bernie Schaming. The award will be reserved for members who have contributed to the success of the club in a variety of ways over a long period of time.

5K Heart Run & Bagel Bash– December 13th
For the 29th year, volunteer members of our 65 Club served as Marshalls at the Haddon Holiday Heart 5K Run (for the American Heart Association). That was on Saturday, December 13, 2014. To serve as Marshalls means we help protect the runners from traffic in West Haddonfield, where most of the race is run. Our members stand at street corners, flag down automobiles and explain to drivers the need to wait until runners have passed. Our members really enjoy participating in this event.
This year our chairman Ron Howley with help from Charles Legge made the event special by hosting a bagel bash at the clubhouse after the 5K run. All members were invited (whether they were marshals or not) and quite a few showed up to have coffee, tea, bagels and doughnuts as well as participate in Wii games, darts or cards. This was a nice addition to the event. Thank you, Ron and Charles.
The Marshalls this year were:
Jack Aharon
Fran DuVernois
Ken Landgraf
Bud Pusatere
Don Beck
Dick Gimigliano
Charles Legge
Howard Rementer
Dick Bell
Ron Howley
Courtney Malcarney
Bernie Schaming

60th Anniversary
Augustus M. Winder married Mary Lou Hostetter in Lancaster, Pa. on January 1, 1955. They met when Mary Lou’s sister, who was dating an instructor at Franklin & Marshall College, brought along an economics instructor, Gus Winder, for Mary Lou. They were surprised to learn that both had graduated from The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va. Gus had also earned an MBA from Harvard, and had taught at several colleges before F&M. Mary Lou was a reporter and photographer for the Lancaster New Era newspaper. Gus found that the practical economics of teaching economics necessitated a change. So he got a job at RCA in Camden where he worked as a financial analyst until retirement. During World War II he served in the US Army in Alaska where he was chief postal clerk in the army post office.
The Winders will celebrate their anniversary at a small gathering of family and friends. Happy Anniversary Gus and Mary Lou!

2015 – Showdown at Gas Tax Gulch?
Between December 2012 and December 2014 the average price of gasoline in New Jersey fell from $ 3.37 per gallon to below $2.60 per gallon. Motorists rejoiced.
Then politicians in Trenton announced that the state’s Transportation Trust Fund, which pays for highway construction and maintenance, will run out of money for new projects in 2015. They warned that something must be done to keep the fund solvent.  Not only does it pay for big road and bridge projects of statewide significance, it doles out money for small local projects as well. Haddonfield received $200,000 from the Trust Fund in fiscal year 2014 for phase three of the improvements to Euclid Ave. Haddon Township and Haddon Heights also received $200, 000 each for road projects.
The Transportation Trust fund was created in 1988 under Republican Governor Tom Kean. That was also the last time the state gasoline tax was increased (from 12 cents to 14.5 cents per gallon, where it still stands today). That is the second lowest state gas tax of all 50 states.
The drums are beating to find some way to “save the Trust Fund.”  State Transportation Commissioner Jamie Fox spoke to some 200 mayors and asked them to join him in a search for “revenue enhancers.”  The ranking Republican on the State Assembly’s Transportation and Public Works Committee has said: “It’s expensive stuff … but you can’t get around it … you need it.” Democratic State Senate President Steven Sweeny simply said “It’s going to be some kind of a tax.”
The Trust Fund crisis puts Governor Christie in a delicate position. He has always opposed raising any taxes.  As a potential candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, his signature on a tax hike bill would hurt him with Republican primary voters.  On the other hand, if he manages a bipartisan compromise which saves the Trust Fund -- and if the price of gas at the pump doesn’t rise much -- it could burnish his image with independent voters should he get the nomination.
One thing is certain: the issue of how to increase the flow of money into the Transportation Trust Fund will be a major issue facing decision-makers in Trenton in the coming year.
