President’s Message
We have some interesting books in our bookcase
ready for your perusal. I asked Len if he is interested in any cookbooks; however,
he said it would stifle his inspiration. So, after weeks on the shelf I took
six cookbooks to the KROC Center in Camden. It seems that for some of our
members the best recipe is a reservation.
Thanks to Bill Brown, our Wine and
Cheese social and the trip to the Revolutionary War Museum in Philadelphia were
big successes. A good time was had by all.
Next up is the Holiday Show at the
Tropicana Casino on Tuesday, December 5. The cost is $47. The bus leaves
Wedgwood pool at 10AM. Call Bill Brown if interested.
Don't miss our Christmas party
Thursday, December 14 at the United Methodist Church starting at 12:30pm.
Please bring an unwrapped gift for someone at Elmwood Hills Healthcare
Center in Lakeland and
either an appetizer or dessert to share with members and their spouses. We have
the Pine Barons barbershop quartet coming back to entertain us. Wives are most
welcome to join us for the party which is always a fun time.
My Christmas wish list includes maid
service at the Club house, massage, good cards, mad money and good cheer.
This is a special time of year for
family, friends, joy and sharing. We are fortunate for the comradery among club
members.

WINE, CHEESE, & A HEALTHY DOSE OF
SATISFACTION
Satisfaction.
Gratification. Contentment.
Goals that many
of us strive for in our moment of time as we make our tours of life.
In early
November the 65 Club held its annual wine and cheese gathering, serving up some
fine wines, tasty cheeses, great desserts, a healthy dose of camaraderie and
something else very special -- satisfaction in lives well lived.
The 60-70
gathered husbands and spouses, and single males, some on the sunny side
of 70 and many
others in their 80s, sat at more than a half-dozen tables, with a small band
playing folk music, and talked with each other about their lives, current
doings, their families, their charitable endeavors and the aging
process...including slowing down physically and mentally, but still relishing
every moment of their time.
But best of
all, as an observer circulated, was the satisfaction gained from their
accomplishments especially with careers and families and children and
grandchildren -- and the special joy provided by all of the relatives and
friends who contributed to their brief time in human history in this vast
universe. They were living in the moment, and enjoying every second of it.
Among the folks
who spread happiness in the evening and contributed their time and effort to
make it what it was, were Henry Leimkuhler, the 65 Club's president, with a
smile on his face and a hand ready to shake, and a hug for the ladies - and he
wasn't even seeking anyone's vote or tweeting. A class act by any
standard.
Then there was
the affable Neil Wise, past president of the club, who visited virtually every
table to impart his form of legal humor, but with only the law of good will and
a hearty laugh or two at his command.
And, of course,
Bill Brown, the club's man of renown, whose endless energy and scheduling of
trips for club events brings joy to many of the club's members, even though he
insists on playing bingo on many of the outings. Bill's a little older, a
little slower, but his wit has withstood the test of time.
And Bob Parsons
and his Hoosier sense of humor, significantly enhanced by his winning the 50-50
drawing, and his pocketing of the prize money with no hesitation.
Fine folks,
all, and with nothing but good will to share with many other peers.
What was really
special was the frequent conversation among many, spiced with the satisfaction
of lives well lived, and the feeling that in each one's moment of time, he or
she had contributed to the joy of those close to them and many others.
The old folks
had their evening. And it was good for this old observer and his wife to
be in their presence.

Golf
We finished the 2017 golf season
with only one rain out cancellation out of 32 scheduled outings. I would like
to thank everyone for their leadership roles in support of scheduling, players’
contacts, putting together the handicaps, and all players for being on time and
letting me know when they were not able to play. Have a great winter, stay
healthy, practice, take a lesson or two and play some golf when the weather permits.

Great
Sports Quotes
Don Meredith, Dallas Cowboys Quarterback once said: “Coach
Tom Landry is such a perfectionist that if he was married to Raquel Welch, he
would expect her to cook.”
"Last year we couldn't win at home and we were losing
on the road. My failure as a coach was that I couldn't think of anyplace
else to play.”- Harry Neale, professional
hockey coach
"When it's third and ten, you can have the milk
drinkers; I'll take the whiskey drinkers every time."- Max McGee, Green Bay Packers receiver
"I found out that it's not good to talk about my
troubles. Eighty percent of the people who hear them don't care and the other
twenty percent are glad I'm having them."- Tommy LaSorda , L A Dodgers manager
"When they operated, I told them to add in a Koufax
fastball. They did, but unfortunately it was Mrs. Koufax's."- Tommy John , N.Y. Yankees, recalling his 1974 arm surgery
"We were tipping off our plays. Whenever we broke from
the huddle, three backs were laughing and one was pale as a ghost." - John Breen, Houston Oilers
"The film looks suspiciously like the game
itself."- Bum Phillips, New Orleans
Saints, after viewing a lopsided loss to the Atlanta Falcons.
"I have discovered in 20 years of moving around the
ball park that the knowledge of the game is usually in inverse proportion to
the price of the seats."- Bill Veeck,
Chicago White Sox owner.
"I have a lifetime contract. That means I can't be
fired during the third quarter if we're ahead and moving the ball."- Lou Holtz , Arkansas football coach
