President’s Message
Welcome to the New Year! The days are getting longer and the arrival of spring and Spring Flowers are not far away.  The Farmers Almanac predicts:
Winter temperatures will be much above normal, on average, with the coldest periods in early to mid-December, early and late January, and early February. Precipitation will be slightly above normal, with below-normal snowfall. The snowiest periods will occur in early December, late January, and mid-February.
So we can think about the possibility of an early spring. While we will have to wait for the warmer weather of April, this is our chance to reflect on how we want to prepare for the rest of this New Year, 2019. I think that a good way to do this is to work on some New Year’s Resolutions. In the past, I have tried resolutions that are negative, that is, giving up things, like chocolate, cookies, wine, beer, coffee, etc. and I never really succeed. However, resolutions where I pick up or add on something seem to work better for me. This year, I am working on these kind of resolutions. I have not come up with any yet. I will keep you posted.
2019 is an exciting tax year for us as well. We get to work through the details of the tax reform legislation. With our standard deduction nearly doubling, the tax brackets changing and income levels changing, what we itemized in prior years will change. With the Child Care deduction going up, maybe this is the time to adopt…?? This tax filing for 2018 will keep us on our ‘mental toes’.
So with all of this change, I wish you all a Happy and Prosperous New Year. And don’t forget that your dues for 2019 ($20) are due.

Dues, Dues, Dues!

For those members who are not familiar with the process, the 65 Club dues collection is handled as follows. They are due by the first of the new year. If they are not paid by the end of January the treasurer normally makes telephone calls. At the end of February, letters are sent by the secretary to all members who have not yet paid. Those not responding to the letters are dropped from the Club records. Also remember that if you are a guest member, or have attained age 90 in 2018 or before, you are not required to pay dues.
My apologies for not getting a dues reminder in the November and December newsletters. The dues are still $20.00.  You may give David Tarditi cash or check at our normal Thursday meetings or send him a check made out to the Haddonfield 65 Club to David Tarditi, 110 Rhoads Ave., Haddonfield, NJ 08033. Please don’t wait until we have to call or send you a letter. We have 154 dues-paying members and only 70 have paid their dues as of this writing.

USGA Senior Golf Rule Changes FOR 2019

Rule 9.k.34(a)  – If a tree is between the ball and the hole, and the tree is deemed to be younger than the player, then the ball can be moved without penalty. This is so because this is simply a question of timing; when the player was younger, the tree was not there so the player is being penalized because of his age.
Rule 1.a.5 – A ball sliced or hooked into the rough shall be lifted and placed on the fairway at a point equal to the distance it carried or rolled into the rough with no penalty. The senior player should not be penalized for tall grass which ground keepers failed to mow.
Rule 2.d.6 (B) – A ball hitting a tree shall be deemed NOT to have hit the tree. This is simply bad luck and luck has no place in a scientific game. The senior player must estimate the distance the ball would have traveled if it had not hit the tree, and play the ball from there.
Rule 3.B.3 – There shall be no such thing as a lost ball. The missing ball is on or near the course and will eventually be found and pocketed by someone else, thereby making it a stolen ball. The senior player is not to compound the felony by charging himself with a penalty.
Rule 4.c.7(h) – If a putt passes over a hole without dropping, it is deemed to have dropped. The Law of Gravity supersedes the Rules of Golf.
Rule 5. – Putts that stop close enough to the cup that they could be blown in, may be blown in. This does not apply to balls more than three inches from the Hole. No one wants to make a mockery of the game.
Rule 6.a.9(k) – There is no penalty for so-called “out of bounds.” If penny-pinching golf course owners bought sufficient land, this would not occur. The senior player deserves an apology, not a penalty.
Rule 7.G.15(z) – There is no penalty for a ball in a water hazard, as golf balls should float. Senior players should not be penalized for any shortcomings of the manufacturers.
Rule 8.k.9(S) – Advertisements claim that golf scores can be improved by purchasing new golf equipment. Since this is financially impractical for many senior players, one-half stroke per hole may be subtracted for using old equipment.
Please advise all your senior friends of these important rule changes and keep multiple copies in your golf bag. Those not following the rules need to be provided a copy.
Golf is... above all.... a game of integrity!
