President’s Message
Hello all you fine 65 club members. Let’s hope the New Year brings health and happiness to us all. A very special thank you to Al Schmidt for his leadership this past year.  He guided me through my 1st Vice President position and made this transition to President most pleasurable. He truly set the bar for what a 65 Club president should be. Let‘s congratulate him for being a recipient of the prestigious Camden County Martin Luther King Freedom Award.
I will admit I had to be dragged through the process of second VP to first VP and now President. When Neil Wise first suggested I become the number two man I really didn’t think through the process. If I had, I might have declined but ignorance is bliss and I’m now happy to become part of this family. I especially like the Thursday speakers however bridge, pinochle and bowling are calling out to me.
I am excited about the coming year just thinking about the trips that Bill Brown will conjure up. I know he has one planned for the Fort Mifflin and Philadelphia’s own Yards brewery so please stay alert. Trips are in February and March. He also is organizing a snack pack event for the Ronald McDonald house. The target date is the February business meeting and we could sure use some help. We are going to pack 100 bags for family members of children in the hospital.
Our new 1st Vice President, Saul Resnick has already filled the calendar with great speakers through March but can always use help in finding those special jewels that the members talk about for weeks. Maybe that jewel could be you. When members talk about their life and the road taken it always makes me think about my own road so maybe I’ll be one of Saul speaker’s. I’ll try to keep you awake but no promises.
I welcome Frank Lodge to the journey as 2nd VP and look forward to his bringing in new members. Our club is a living thing and our life blood is membership. Please reach out and help Frank like you did for me when I came onboard.
In case some have not heard I want to alert you that Bernie Schaming will be starting his last year as Secretary and newsletter editor after 17 YEARS! He has to me been the one person I could go to for any questions about the history of the club. Although I am only a four-year member I would have been lost without his help in the past and going forward into the New Year. Watch out though, we’re in the hunt for his replacement for 2020 so please think about moving in to his spot. If interested, contact Bernie and he will help you through the transition.
Lastly, I hope I can in some way fill the shoes of my predecessors whose devotion to the club has made this club a very special place.

One of my favorite thoughts:
“What day is it” asked Pooh.”
“It’s today.” squeaked Piglet.
“My favorite day.” said Pooh.

Dues, Dues, Dues!

As of mid-January, 100 members have paid their dues, which totals $2,000. We are expecting that about 50 more of our current members will be paying their dues in the next few weeks. Last year, we ended up with 153 dues paying members.
I believe that if our members' spouses / partners received a "dunning notice" they would have a Holy Fit, because the 65 Cub helps the wives to have some peace and quiet at least 4 -5 hours a week when their husband / mate is not home and not getting into any mischief. After all, at the 65 Club, he is with a friendly group of mostly "law-abiding " guys he can hang out with, and the monetary investment is $20, which is under 40 cents a week.
Help the cause and mail or drop off your $20 check (made out to the Haddonfield 65 Club) at the clubhouse located at 110 Rhoads Ave., Haddonfield NJ.

65 Club Member Receives Award
January 232019

On January 23, 2019 Al Schmidt was presented the Camden County Martin Luther King Freedom Award for his community service. The dinner and presentations were attended by a number of club members supporting Al. Congratulations Al on a well-deserved award. Al follows in the footsteps of Bill Brown and Walt Baker who have also received this award in prior years.

 65 Club Position Openings

Don Beck, who has served as Corresponding Secretary for over 17 years is stepping down. Thank you Don for many years of service to the club. Don’s responsibilities have been the following:
● Send get-well cards to ailing members
● Send sympathy cards to families of deceased members
● Send memorial donations on behalf of deceased members
● Prepare and mail Christmas cards to homebound or out of the area members
● Ensure we have envelopes and stamps for newsletter mailings
● file and end-of-year report listing those who received the cards during the prior year

If you are so inclined to pick up this responsibility, please contact our president, Jay Cokos at 428-3621 or jjcokos@yahoo.com. This is not on overburdening commitment but an important one that lets members and families know that we think of them and care about them.

Bernie Schaming who has served as Secretary and Newsletter Editor for over 17 years is also stepping down. Dewaine Osman has agreed to take over the newsletter beginning in the summer of 2019 but we need a volunteer to take on the office of secretary by the end of the year. The sooner we can fill the position the better so that there is adequate time to transfer records and knowledge. Since maintaining the database for the 65 Club is one of the responsibilities, familiarity with database software and email is necessary.
